About the Artist...

Wildlife Artist

BRUCE MATTESON

Bruce Matteson is internationally recognized as a master of wildlife painting.  Though subjects for his work have varied from landscapes to portraits.  It is in his portrayal of wildlife that all his power, insight and understanding really come together.

Matteson was born and raised in southern Michigan. He has been a nature lover his entire life. Before reaching his teens, he knew the art of tracking, observing and photographing animals in their natural habitat. His study of wildlife was further enhanced by raising animals, including fox, raccoon, and owls.

Matteson, a graduate of the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, California, was a professional Chicago illustrator for eleven years.

In 1973, he left his successful illustrating career to devote his full attention to outdoor subject matter. He has appeared in several one-man art shows from coast to coast.

Featured on the covers of many leading magazines, he has completed ten covers for "Ducks Unlimited" alone. Matteson's numerous honors and awards over the years include the Blue ribbon at the Kansas City Ducks Unlimited Art Show, invitations to such renowned annual meetings as Safari Club International, Game Coin, and the Grand Slam Club: as well as being invited as annual guest artist to major Ducks Unlimited dinners across the country.

Matteson's new and different approach to wildlife painting, and his development of the montage portrait, led to a commission to paint "Liberty," former President Gerald R. Ford's golden retriever. Other notable clients include the late President Lyndon B. Johnson.

Some of his latest achievements have been in Western art. Whether working in watercolor, pen, pencil or acrylic, Matteson's insight and outdoor achievements, along with his bold design and composition, make him one of the most unique, contemporary wildlife artists on the art scene today.
